Information on the members of the Mother Jones 400 list was researched by Rachel Burstein, a Mother Jones investigator based in Washington, D.C.

The ranking of the Mother Jones 400 list was compiled by Larry Makinson of the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan research group in Washington, D.C. Makinson has traced the political contributions in every national election since 1988. For this project, he analyzed all Federal Election Commission records from 1993 through June 1995.
