Taking Stock in Congress

A Special MoJo Wire Investigative Feature

While investors spend time worrying how their stocks will do, members of Congress often already know. Gregory Boller, a professor of marketing at the University of Memphis, took a peek inside Congress' portfolio.

The Study

With the help of students, Boller compared financial disclosure statements with voting records and found at least 83 members with some eyebrow-raising coincidences between playing the market and passing the law. Boller's team selected from the frame of the 206 members of Congress who traded stocks from 1991 to 1993. From the frame, they selected a random sample of 111 members who they investigated in detail.
