Brodner's Cartoon du Jour: Homo Iraqtus
July 7, 2008
Wait till you see the fireworks Mr. Missing Link & Co. are planning for the people of Iran (and it's the people, you know, who do the dying in aerial attacks). Evidence we want to ignore, like the last time, abounds. Let's see if we can act differently now, having learned the hard way.

2. Lets consider the specifics: Iran has established certain reinforced underground bunkers to develop nuclear fuel. This, they have readily admitted. They claim that such development is purely peaceful and only for nuclear power generation. Obviously, the Security Counsel does not believe such claims, including some of Iran’s traditional allies, such as China and Russia. Naturally, Iran’s traditional adversaries such as Israel, the USA and yes, even some Arab/Muslim oil producers--also don’t believe them. But it also makes no sense because who would risk such a wide-spread conflict over a nuclear power plant, when the world has already offered Iran numerous concessions--to compensate them?? Ridiculous.
3. The threat against Iran is confined to a strike on this underground facility. It might not even be successful, depending on how deep it is underground or, how reinforced it is.
4. The threats Iran has made to retaliate goes as follows: They claim to have 4,000 medium-range missiles ready and will launch them against civilian populations in Israel, regardless of where the strike against their bunker actually originates. Israel has already estimated a civilian death-toll of about 50,000 in Tel Aviv alone. Iran has also stated in various press conferences that its retaliation would not be confined to Israel and might also include certain countries which it deems to be allied with the USA. This threat may be part of what has driven up the price of oil, based on speculation that Iraq, Saudi Arabia and others may also be targets of an Iranian retaliation. Recently, Iran has threatened to close the “Straits of Hormuz” to all shipping and thereby attempt to starve the world for energy. http://www.jpost.com/servlet/S atellite?cid=1215330891335&pag ename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull All of this to safeguard their ambition for a nuclear power station?? If you believe this, I have some prime swamp land to sell you in Kabul.
5. Iran pretends to be a democracy but free speech, free press and freedom of the electorate does not actually exist. The Islamic clerics get to disqualify any politician who does not meet their criteria.
I tend to believe that either Israel or the USA (or both jointly) will strike the bunker—unless Iran capitulates. I am not so sure that Iran would actually follow-up on its various threats but if it does, ‘get-your-marshmallows-on-your-sticks’ boys and girls.
