Bill Bradley
Bill Bradley has essentially disappeared from the political radar, much to the chagrin of a few liberals. When he announced his retirement from the Senate, he said, "Politics is broken." This has folks asking, "Can you fix it, Bill? Will you?"
Bradley says that he will not challenge Clinton for the democratic nomination, but that he is considering a run as an independent. His sentiments in some ways mirror those of the electorate: both parties are not "speak(ing) to people where they live their lives" (Washington Post, August 24, 1995). Bradley's mention of a conversation with Colin Powell had people talking about the possibility of a Bradley/Powell ticket, back in a time when the race had a lot more room for wild cards.
Pipe dream or possibility? One White House official says the shot would be long, because Bradley has "no money, no organization and no national constituency" (Washington Post, August 18, 1995). But if motives matter, Bradley's got an ace in the hole: "If it would help get this country back in the right direction, I would consider it" (Washington Post, Aug. 18, 1995).
