President Bill Clinton

After Labor Day, Bill can do what Bill does best . . . campaign. Job one is to scare off any potential Democratic spoilers. Facing opposition in the primaries hurt Jimmy Carter in 1980. And let's not forget the job Pat Buchanan did on George Bush in 1992. Clinton's campaign staff is beating the war chest like a drum, warning any challengers: This is the big leagues, leave that farm league stuff at home. They've already raised $10 million, with another $10 mil expected before Thanksgiving.

Thusfar, no serious challengers have come out of the woodwork. But the party is worried that Jesse Jackson, or Bill Bradley will decide to run as independents and do to Bill what Ross Perot did to Bush in 1992. This has Bill's folks baring their teeth in Iowa, home of the first caucus, where Clinton's hired a high-rent Chicago consulting firm to run the show.

There's a new chapter in the stormy romance between Clinton and Dick Morris. Morris has been an F.O.B. since 1976, when he helped Bill become Governor of Arkansas. For the past few years, however, his biggest client was Republican Majority Whip Sen. Trent Lott, Newt Gingrich's closest ally in the Senate, and earlier this year Morris vowed to work as a consultant for Republicans only. But now he's suddenly earning $15,000 a month on Clinton's campaign, and some White House staffers have conveyed fears that Morris is running the show. Is Bill bedding down with the enemy?

Internet Resources for Clinton:

CLINTON/GORE '96
The official campaign site, it offers lots of virtual flesh-pressing, baby-kissing, and other tricks of the incumbent trade. This glossy government website is a good place to find speeches, documents and biographical information about the entrenched incumbents. And where else can you download a picture of Hillary standing with the Easter Bunny?
